Job Summary:

The Institute of Continuous Learning in the Department of Nursing Administration at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time TH Assistant Director of Nursing / Medical-Surgical Educator. The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrate expert knowledge and competencies related to the role of clinical practitioner, facilitator of education and training, consultant, and outcomes-based practice related to design and delivery of medical-surgical nursing education programs.
  • Apply adult learning principles in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating medical-surgical nursing orientation and continuing education programs to ensure Initial and on-going competency of nursing staff.
  • Participate in goal-directed activities of Nursing Education and the Institute of Continuous Learning by conducting orientation and training programs to newly hired nursing staff. Provide support and guidance to nurses during clinical orientation.
  • Maintain records of education and competency of nursing staff for regulatory purposes.
  • Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate relevant orientation and training programs through which newly hired staff are introduced to the culture, philosophy, goals, policies, procedures, role expectations, physical facilities, services, and other factors necessary to function in a specific work setting.
  • Provide education and training programs that enhance staff clinical judgment, clinical and technical skills, and meet mandatory education requirements.
  • Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities in Nursing Education and in the Department of Nursing Services.
  • Develop and implement relevant education and training programs required to address quality improvement problems/issues requiring educative intervention.
  • Participate in nursing and other hospital committee work as required.
  • Collaborate with nursing leadership and nursing staff members in assessing learning needs of staff and in formulating and implementing standards of care for patients.
  • Integrate policies, protocols, patient care standards, and documentation requirements into orientation and staff development programs.
  • Continue to seek opportunities toward professional growth through formal education and participation in relevant continuing education.
  • Collaborate with the medical interdisciplinary team and members of other medical center departments to design, plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs.
  • Integrate clinical trainings with corresponding electronic documentation. 1S. Maintain accurate documentation and provide written reports as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Nursing Degree.
  • New York State Registered Nurse Licensure.
  • 5+ years of post-licensure experience, including 3+ years in specialty and 2+ years in a management/supervisory role. 
  • Experience in EHR, patient-focused and empathic.
  • Expert knowledge and competencies related to the role of clinical practitioner, facilitator of education and training, consultant and outcomes-based practice related to design and delivery of medical-surgical nursing education program. 
  • Or, a satisfactory equivalent combination of experience, education and training.

Monday to Friday; 8:00am to 4:00pm (Full-Time)

SL-5

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
