Job Summary:

The Department of Transplant Surgery at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time TH Physician Assistant 1. The successful candidate will:

  • Provide full support to the department of surgery by evaluating inpatients in conjunction with surgery residents when attendings are not immediately available and communicates effectively with physicians.
  • Order and follow up on the scheduling and performance of diagnostic test.
  • Complete medication orders and monitors performances of prescribed treatment plan.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, resident and nursing staff in a timely interpretation of clinical information.
  • liaise and communicate effectively with physicians of all departments, nursing and ancillary staff in streamlining patient care and reducing length of stay.
  • Monitor day-to-day clinical events on post-operative patients and make treatment decision based on clinical events while participating in discharge planning conferences/rounds with social workers and case managers.
  • Ensure that patients are adequately prepared for hospital discharge and that follow-up schedules are properly put in place.
  • Support perioperative care by networking with other clinical disciplines and support staff in expediting perioperative evaluation for inpatients and patients to be scheduled for future elective procedures while completing pre-op history and physicals.
  • Supports the Surgical Education Program by educating residents, medical students and nursing staff in techniques of care for patients with surgical conditions.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by performing additional job-related duties as business needs warrant and/or as needed.  

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • New York State Physician Assistant Licensure.
  • 2-years of hospital-based Physician Assistant experience. 
  • 1-year of experience in General Surgery environment. 
  • BLS and ACLS Certification.
  • Or, a satisfactory equivalent combination of experience, education and training to the above. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • National Certification by AAPA preferred.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday: 6:00am to 6:00pm (Full-Time)

Salary Grade/Rank:

SL-5

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
