Job Summary:

The Department of Anesthesiology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a General Anesthesiologist to join our academic anesthesiology faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor (HS).

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Administer anesthesia in the main operating room, ambulatory surgery center, and obstetrical suite, utilizing general, regional, and sedation techniques.
  • Provide anesthesia care for a broad range of cases, including general surgery, orthopedics, vascular, robotics (general surgery, GU, GYN), and renal transplant.
  • Supervise residents in a 2-OR care team model during daytime clinical assignments.
  • Participate in obstetric anesthesia coverage with resident support; low-volume OB service (approximately 400–500 deliveries annually).
  • No trauma, cardiac, or neuro anesthesia.

Academic Responsibilities

  • Participate in clinical teaching and supervision of residents and medical students.
  • Provide classroom instruction and evaluate residents and students in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Mentor trainees in research and scholarly activities.
  • Contribute to departmental administrative responsibilities.

Call Responsibilities

  • 4-call/grid requirement (approximately one call per week).
  • Call begins at 3:00 PM.
  • Coverage includes main OR and obstetrical suite with support from three residents.
  • Occasional urgent or emergent cases.

Required Qualifications:

  • New York State Medical License.
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited anesthesiology residency program.
  • American Board of Anesthesiology Certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Subspecialty training not required but preferred (if applicable).

Variable Days; Variable Hours (Full-Time)

Salary Grade/Rank:

 

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications

  • $500,000 total annual salary (W-2).

Optional additional call opportunities compensated at premium hourly rates, separate from base salary:

  • Weekday call: $150/hour
  • Friday call: $175/hour
  • Saturday call: $175/hour
  • Sunday call: $150/hour
