Job Summary:

The Department of Information Services at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Staff Assistant / Telephone System Specialist. 

Reporting to the Director of Telecommunications the Staff Assistant will take responsibility for the day to day care and execution of all moves, adds or changes that will need to be performed at SUNY Downstate. The incumbent will be responsible for the installation, testing and maintenance for all telephony related activity. The incumbent will be required to coordinate with specialist, local service provider and the main campus project teams on an as needed basis.

The Telephone Systems Specialist will install all new telephones and insure that they are working properly with the existing Avaya PBX at the facility. The incumbent will respond in a timely manner when called upon to enact repairs to existing telephones. The selected candidate will have strong technical skills and above average abilities in planning, scheduling and troubleshooting all station installations.

Other Duties/Responsibilities include the following:

  • Accept delivery and maintain an inventory of telephone equipment from the vendor
  • Perform all telephone installations and testing on a timely basis
  • Prepare Team Dynamix tickets for the end users
  • Maintain an effective working relationship campus-wide and with vendors
  • Keep accurate records of all installations, maintenance and repair work and submit periodic reports to supervisor
  • Install and maintain voice services from our carriers of choice (Verizon, Windstream, etc..) to include POTS lines used for monitoring fire and security systems
  • Troubleshoot and repair all circuit related issues and work with the associated carriers and PBX maintenance vendor until resolved. Submit RCA Report to Supervisor
  • Complete Basic PBX programming such as adding new extensions, VM Profiles, Coverage Paths, Phone Set Features, etc.
  • Complete all relocation requests for the phone sets and fax lines
  • Complete all basic voice cabling repairs, cross connects and punch downs.
  • Provide access to the DEMARC and PBX Rooms for the Carrier and Maintenance vendors.
  • Provide afterhours support (24x7x365) as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or technical and practical training in telecommunications installation and maintenance practices.
  • 5+ years of experience in telephone installation and maintenance to include expertise in maintaining a clean station wire frame and accurate cross connections for both analog and digital telephones.
  • The ability to work with minimum of supervision.
  • Candidate should be able to lift at least forty pounds at one time.
  • Or, a satisfactory equivalent combination of experience, education and training to the above. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Avaya CM 5.2 PBX is preferred but not necessary.

Monday to Friday; 9:00am to 5:00pm (Full-Time)
