Job Summary:

The Department of Pathology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a Clinical Assistant Professor (HS)/Hematopathologist. The successful candidate will:

  • Include clinical sign-out duties in hematopathology and leadership roles in research, quality management, and in the education of medical students, residents and fellows. Opportunities for surgical pathology sign-out are available if interested.
  • Participate in research with presentation of work at national meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Provide clinical coverage for Hematopathology and sign-out (diagnosis) of peripheral blood, lymph nodes, bone marrows, and lymphoma / leukemia diagnoses of solid organs. This includes call coverage and communication of critical values (identification of blasts and other critical values) after hours and on weekends.
  • Arrange the call and day coverage schedule so there is continuous coverage of hematopathology service.
  • Manage medical and technical aspects of hematology/hematopathology testing and overseeing function and operation of the laboratory. 
    • Oversight of validation and maintaining the technical accuracy and medical reliability of laboratory tests.
    • Supervise hematology laboratory professional, technical and support staff in support of the laboratories' clinical and administrative responsibilities.
    • Service as clinical consultant in hematology and hematopathology, conferring with physicians at all levels regarding flow cytometry, molecular testing, and other diagnostics necessary for patient diagnoses.
  • Work with the Director of Clinical Laboratories towards full compliance with laboratory regulatory standards of CAP, NY State, Joint Commission, etc.
  • Provide support for the Transplant service as pathology liaison at Transplant meetings.
  • Management of research in the Clinical Laboratories, including consultations with clinical and translational investigators, approving projects prior to the specimen use and acting as liaison with IRB.
  • Participate in tumor boards.
  • Participate and support clinical and anatomic pathology services, including Transplant Pathology, Molecular Pathology, Transfusion Medicine / Blood Banking, Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, Hematopathology, and Chemical Pathology, including taking call, as appropriate and credentialed.
  • Participate in departmental, hospital, and medical center-based committees as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO Degree.
  • Board certification or eligibility in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.
  • Board certification or board eligibility in Hematopathology.
  • Eligibility for New York State Medical Licensure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for New York State Certificate of Qualification in Hematology.
