Job Summary:

The Department of Residential Life and Services at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Cleaner.
Cleaners perform a wide range of cleaning tasks to maintain assigned areas in State buildings, and surrounding grounds and walkways. Incumbents work independently or as part of a cleaning team in a variety of settings, such as administrative office, classroom, hospital, laboratory, living, treatment, and other work areas.
Illustrative Duties:
- Performs a variety of cleaning tasks in assigned areas.
- Collects and empties trash and recycling in accordance with cleaning schedules; cleans and/or removes hazardous or misplaced items, waste, and spills; and disposes, transports, or places such in appropriate receptacles and locations, following proper cleaning procedures.
- Assembles cleaning carts according to assigned tasks; and prepares, mixes, and dilutes cleaning solutions following manufacturer directions.
- Washes floors, corridors, stairwells, walls, partitions, and windows using mops, detergents, brushes, and other cleaning devices.
- Vacuums, strips and waxes floors, and shampoos carpets, using manual or mechanical equipment.
- Scrubs and cleans showers and restrooms, including toilets, sinks, and drains, using hand-operated equipment and cleaning agents.
- Replaces light bulbs, and dusts or washes light fixtures and high places, such as ceilings, using ladders, other appropriate equipment, and tools.
- Polishes wood and metal surfaces, fixtures, furniture, and equipment.
- Monitors cleaning supplies and equipment; and notifies supervisor of supply levels, equipment malfunction, and/or maintenance issues observed during cleaning.
- Replaces, cleans, and/or hangs building fixtures and decorative items, such as curtains, blinds, and pictures.
- Moves, and arranges furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning tasks or in preparation for meetings, events, and other activities.
- May be required to follow specialized disinfectant, waste disposal, and cleanliness standards in performing cleaning tasks; remove snow and salt walkways; clean sidewalks, drives, and grounds; mow lawns, using mechanical and manual equipment; perform routine laundry tasks; and change bed linens.
