Job Summary:

The Department of Cell/Cellular Biology and Anatomical Sciences at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Executive Director.

Downstate Technology Center, Inc. (DTCI) is the not-for-profit corporation that operates the two-building Biotechnology Incubator at the campus of SUNY’s Downstate Health Sciences University in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The DTCI Executive Director is responsible for all operations of the two business incubator buildings and also staffs the DTCI Board of Directors, whose individual members are appointed by The Health Science Center at Brooklyn Foundation Inc. (the campus philanthropic foundation at SUNY Downstate) and the Research Foundation for the State University of New York (RF SUNY).

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Reports to the Board of Directors, recommends policy to the Board, and implements its decisions;
  • Recruits and vets appropriate tenants, supervises their move-in/move-out, and ensures their building-operational concerns are addressed by in-house staff or contracted experts;
  • Drafts all tenant leases and amendments and monitors to assure all tenants are current in their rent obligations and other charges;
  • Supervises and evaluates a salaried Senior Project Manager, a salaried Building Manager, a contracted Building Engineer, a contracted Safety Advisor, and a grant-supported Entrepreneurship Counselor;
  • Manages disbursements from existing grants and reporting back to the funders;
  • Identifies and pursues new funding opportunities;
  • Oversees payment of vendor/contractor invoices;
  • Prepares annual budget and regular financial reports to the board;
  • Manages relationships with an independent auditing firm;
  • Oversees any necessary physical planning, including tenant fit-out and renovation of shared building infrastructure as directed by the Board or required by government agencies;
  • Manages relationships with government entities at the city, state, and federal levels;
  • Represents the Incubator at public and life-science industry events;
  • Conducts guest visits;
  • Manages relations with SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, including
  • working with academic leadership to secure adjunct faculty appointments for qualified principals of tenant companies;
  • Coordinating payroll reimbursements and other matters with university staff in key administrative functions such as finance and budgeting;
  • Advising faculty and student inventors who have entrepreneurial interests that could be served effectively by residency in the incubator;
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in management roles
  • Readiness to assume executive responsibility
  • Superior skills at organization, attention to detail, priority-setting, and multi-tasking
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise others fairly
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to deal with demanding customers (life-science tenants)
  • Ability to read and comprehend legal and engineering documents prepared by others
  • Advanced working knowledge of computational packages and cloud-based resources for business management (e.g., QuickBooks), word processing, spreadsheets, email, calendar management, project management, data analysis and visualization, and presentation development
  • Or education, training and/or experience equivalent to above

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in business incubation, at either a high-technology or life-science business incubator with an economic-development mission
  • Substantive knowledge of the life sciences at the undergraduate or graduate level so that you can communicate well with the Incubator tenants, the Downstate VP for Research, and the Downstate/RF technology transfer office
  • Experience with entrepreneurial businesses and their growth trajectories so that you understand the pressures and expectations that DTCI tenants operate under

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday; 9:00am to 5:00pm (Full-Time)

SL-6

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
