The individual who assumes this position will be responsible for ensuring a tradition of excellence into the future.

The Chair will recruit, direct, and develop a faculty who, as a group, can provide the full range of primary care services. The current Department of Family and Community Medicine has nine full-time attending faculty including a Psychiatrist, and five part-time attendings including four attendings who are resident preceptors and a hospitalist. The department's Residency Program is a three-year accredited program, with six residents at each training level. Family physicians see patients in two Family Medicine Centers (Suite Bin University Hospital of Brooklyn and Family Health Services, a community-based facility) as well as a dedicated 24/7 inpatient service.

The Department Chair is also responsible for managing our affiliated hospital centers and partnering with other faculty to build a thriving practice that draws patients and referrals from throughout Brooklyn and beyond. The Chair of Family and Community Medicine will be responsible for administrative operations of the academic Department of Family and Community Medicine at Downstate. In this capacity, the Chair will be responsible for the oversight and success of academic mission of the department including its teaching enterprise in medical student education across all years {UME), resident and fellow education (GME), and health professional’s education as well as the department's research enterprise including studying the outcomes of health interventions in the community.

Working with leadership of University Hospital at Downstate and with the Clinical Practice Management Plan (University Physicians of Brooklyn}, the Chair will be responsible for oversight of the clinical enterprise including hospital-based clinics and services, satellite practice sites and the inpatient service.

A reputation for path-breaking research will, in turn, enhance our ability to attract patients, referrals, and residents, creating the foundation for a new phase of departmental growth. We also expect that the faculty the Chair will recruit will significantly expand the range of services available to its patients while providing a superb educational experience for our residents and students.

The Chair will maintain and enhance Downstate's residency and fellowship programs in primary care and our clerkship offering for medical students. Our graduates have long been recognized as being well prepared to make significant contributions in their discipline, but we believe that we can further enhance the quality and reputation of these programs and will rely on the Chair and the faculty to devote considerable attention to this task.
