Job Summary:

The Department of Pharmacy at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time TH Pharmacy Assistant/Infusion Pharmacy Assistant. The successful candidate will:

Responsible for assisting the hospital pharmacists in their daily activities for dispensing, admixing, preparing, and monitoring drugs used for patient care. The Infusion Pharmacy Technician works with Patient Access Department and initiates the authorization process for approval of chemotherapy and medication infusions. Responsible for retrieving and documenting the required information needed for approval. Monitors the process and ensures that patients are scheduled for infusions. This position may require some physical activities such as lifting packages and drug containers.

  • Under the direction and supervision of a pharmacist, provides accurate assistance in the filling of orders, performance of clerical duties and maintaining adequate supplies.
  • Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist, compounds sterile intravenous preparations including the preparation and handling of hazardous drugs.
  • Collaborate with the Patient Access Department to ensure that prior authorizations for medications are obtained in a timely manner and that the pharmacy is reimbursed for services rendered.
  • Review records to obtain clinical information and ensure substantial clinical information exists to reach a clinical determination for pharmacist review.
  • Effectively communicate issues and resolutions to pharmacy staff, providers, and appropriate internal stakeholders.
  • Monitor, manage, and reconcile patient data base.
  • Document information required for authorization of medications and administration.
  • Schedule patients for infusions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must fulfill one of the following in order to meet minimum qualifications:

    • New York State Pharmacy Technician License and National Pharmacy Technician Certification.
      • OR National Pharmacy Technician Certification with 0 to 1-year of pharmacy experience (customer service associate/assistant/ technician) and New York State Pharmacy Technician license within 6-months.
      • OR without National Pharmacy Technician Certification, 0 to 1-year pharmacy experience (customer service associate/assistant/technician). Will be required to receive the National Pharmacy Technician Certification within 18-months of hire followed by New York State Pharmacy Technician License within 6-months of national certification.
  • Experience handling prior authorization requests/understanding of prior authorization requirements.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor's Degree.
  • Chemotherapy and Infusion experience.

Variable Days; Variable Hours (Full-Time)

Salary Grade/Rank:

SL-1

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications

  • $41,372 to $55,000 plus $3,087 Location Pay
