Job Summary:

The Department of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse 1, NS81 CPCU. The successful candidate will:

  • Provide direct and indirect care to patients.
  • Serve as a liaison between nursing, clinical support staff and the Provider(s).
  • Advocate on behalf of the nursing and clinical support staff by supporting and promoting a team environment.
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the patient’s interdisciplinary team.
  • In collaboration with Quality Management, participates in the AFH Quality Improvement process; collect and analyze data to monitor the delivery of patient care including, but not limited to, discipline-specific chart audits, triage, and other quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assess unique nursing needs of patients, formulate nursing care plans and write nursing orders under the direction of the attending physicians.
  • Oversee the daily flow of the health center (in the back office) including, but not limited to: patient scheduling, team assignments, examination room assignments, medication dispensary, laboratory functions (point of care testing and reference laboratory services), work results, lunch and break coverage.
  • Ensure the health center and staff provide an environment of care that supports the principles of patient and family-centered care by establishing effective partnerships characterized by mutual respect and inclusion in the care process.
  • Assess and train nursing staff on clinical competencies upon hire, annually, and as needed
  • Meet nursing operational standards by contributing information to strategic plans and reviews; implement production, productivity, quality, customer-service standards, resolve problems and identifying system improvements.
  • Develop and maintain working knowledge of the following programs:
    • Infection Control Program
    • Code of Conduct
    • Environment of Care Management Plans
    • Emergency Management Program (as needed, participate in emergency response activities).
  • Ensure compliance with all infection control and environment of care regulations at all levels (high, intermediate and low disinfection practices).
  • Protect patients and employees by developing and interpreting infection-control policies and protocols; enforcing medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
  • Ensure quality of care by developing (and interpreting) hospital and nursing division’s philosophies and standards of care.
  • Maintain nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures.
  • Enforce adherence to state board of nursing, state nurse practice act requirements and to other governing agency regulations measuring health outcomes against standards; making or recommending adjustments.
  • Meet nursing financial standards by providing annual budget information, monitor expenditures, identifying variances and implementing corrective actions.
  • Ensure daily monitoring of quality controls and medication logs; as necessary, implement appropriate follow-up.
  • Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.
  • Promote patient independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching and counseling patient, friends, family and reinforcing their understanding of disease, medications, and self-care skills.
  • Provide information to patients and health care team by answering questions and requests.
  • Resolve patient needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by designing and implementing procedures, rules, and regulations; calling for assistance from other health care professionals.
  • Maintain patient confidence and protects operations by monitoring confidential information processing.
  • Maintain documentation of patient care services by auditing patient and department records.
  • Ensure operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and maintains nursing supplies inventory by studying usage reports identifying trends.

Required Qualifications:

  • New York State Registered Nurse Licensure.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
  • 1-year of relevant clinical experience.

Variable Days; 7:30am to 8:00pm

As per civil service guidelines
