Job Summary:

The Department of Medical Board Credentialing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a Credentialing Specialist / TH Staff Assistant 2. The successful candidate will:

  • Distribute applications for medical staff membership and/or clinical privileges.
  • Process applications for initial appointments and reappointments as assigned, within 60 days, and in compliance with Bylaws, Policies and Procedures, National Committee for Collects and analyzes primary source verifications of credentials, education, and training information if necessary and/or requested.
  • Assemble and prepare credentialing files for review by the Director, Clinical Department Chairman and/or Chief, and Credentials and Medical Executive committees.
  • Perform accurate data entry to credentialing software and assists with the database management.
  • Track, monitor, and update expired credentials and information to ensure that accurate and current data exist for each practitioner maintained in the database and those providers' licenses and certifications remain current.
  • Maintain and apply working knowledge of the credentialing requirements and standards of CMS and NYS laws relating to the credentialing, privileging and the medical staff organization, the Joint Commission and National Committee on Quality Assurance.
  • Coordinate and support meetings of the Credentials Committee, Medical Executive Committee, or Medical Staff, and coordinates follow-up from meetings to assure that action is take, referrals are timely, and notification to individuals as necessary is completed.
  • Assist with reviewing and preparing credential files to ensure compliance for Managed Care audits, site visits, and accreditation surveys.
  • Process requests for verification of hospital affiliation (2805 Letters) to respond within 45 days of the date requests.
  • Support the Medical Board administrative functions (answering phones, reception, filing, scanning, audit preparations, mailings). 
  • Perform other duties as assigned and assists in special projects as needed to meet department and/or system needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • Ability to handle large work volume independently.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in hospital medical staff credentialing.
  • College coursework, if no degree.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday; 8:30pm to 4:30pm
