Job Summary:

The Department of University Police and Public Safety at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time University Police Communications & Security Specialist I. The successful candidate will: 

  • Control base, fixed or mobile communication systems.
  • Maintain status and control over all mobile radio units service.
  • Monitor all equipment in the dispatch area and reports all departures from required procedures to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Report emergency situations to the supervisory personnel, including the inability to establish communications with a mobile unit.
  • Operate computers, communications, and support equipment, consistent with New York State E-Justice and National Crime Information Center rules and regulations.
  • Operate radio, telephone, and broadcast equipment, closed-circuit television systems, and electronic security systems.
  • Monitor, activate, deactivate, and control electronic access systems.
  • Enter, update, and queries information in various computers and systems.
  • Retrieve and review messages received from data systems and stores or distributes them according to prescribed procedures.
  • Prepare written reports and maintains the police department blotter as assigned.
  • Maintain communication files and performs other communication-related duties as required by the shift supervisor.
  • May perform security guard duties to support campus police operations.
  • Respond to calls for assistance to ensure that property is secured until a police officer arrives at the scene.
  • Assist with calls for service such as unlocking doors, providing safety escorts, and inspecting safety equipment.
  • Patrol assigned area on foot to deter criminal activity by means of presence and witness, and to detect and report any dangerous situations such as fires.
  • Post assignments at a specific location for security or safety reasons.
  • Prepare and files a variety of reports and logs, and performs other security related activities. 
  • May issue and maintain department equipment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Will have sat for the New York State Department of Civil Service University Police Communications and Safety Specialist 1 Examination, achieving a passing score and reachable by score on a canvass list. 
  • Promotion: 1-year of permanent service as a Security Services Assistant 1, Security Services Assistant 2, or Security Officer.
  • Open Competitive: 1-year of full-time experience as a police or peace officer;
      • OR  1-year of full-time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency including fire departments, emergency medical services, or law enforcement;
      • OR  1-year of active U.S. military service as a dispatcher of military police or security personnel and an honorable discharge or under conditions in the NYS Restoration of Honor Act;
      • OR 30 college credit hours from an accredited institution of higher education.
    • New York State Security Guard Licensure.
