Job Summary:

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Social Worker III. The successful candidate will:

  • Work closely with both OBGYN and Pediatrics Initiative leadership as the primary link between the program and the practices.
  • Have a supervisory role to ensure efficient implementation and adherence of institutional policies and practices through collaborative team members.
  • Meet regularly with BPN staff and Downstate CHW to ensure effective implementation and ensure that the needs of patients are met. 
  • Provide psychosocial  assessment, support and referral when needed to practice.
  • Assesses and identifies psychosocial needs and develops criteria to assure that patients and families in need of social work assistance obtain needed services. 
  • Provide supervision to subordinate staff and social worker students to teach the skills of the profession and provide knowledge of hospital policies and procedures. 
  • Engage patients/families in a professional treatment relationship to assess the need for social work intervention; uses methods consistent with sound social work practice in order to help the patient/family cope with psychosocial problems.
  • Conduct individual interviews with patients and/or relatives and family.
  • Work with groups of patients and/or families.
  • Interpret to other hospital staff, the psychosocial problems of patients/families which affect behavior and/or discharge planning.
  • Initiate and participate in interdisciplinary conferences. 

Required Qualifications:

  • LMSW or LCSW certification.
  • Excellent communicator with a willingness to learn and collaborate with interdepartmental, institutional, and community partners. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 to 3 years of post-Master's work experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a hospital and/or healthcare setting preferred. 
  • Experience working with a maternal and infant population preferred.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday; 9:00am to 5:00pm

Salary Grade/Rank:

SL-2

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
