Job Summary:

The Department of Ambulatory Care at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse.

Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurses provide direct nursing care to individuals receiving treatment in State University of New York teaching and research center hospitals. Incumbents perform nursing care tasks and procedures consistent with individual treatment plans; administer medications as prescribed; observe and report individuals’ responses to treatments and health status changes; attend to individuals’ personal needs, such as daily living and hygiene tasks; and perform limited housekeeping duties to ensure safe, clean, and therapeutic environments.

Illustrative Tasks

Under the direction of a Teaching & Research Center Nurse, physician, or other licensed health care provider, performs the following nursing care tasks and procedures: 

  • Administers prescribed medications and nursing procedures to individuals.
  • Obtains and records individuals’ vital signs using standard instruments and procedures.
  • Observes, monitors, and records symptoms and conditions to obtain information for diagnosis and treatment; identifies responses to medication or other health status changes; and reports to a registered nurse, physician, or other licensed health care provider to provide information for diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Under direction from registered nurses or physicians, treats patients as directed.
  • Prepares individuals for or assists with examinations and treatments.
  • Gathers urine, stool, and other specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Maintains charts and other records of individuals’ conditions and treatments.
  • Attends to individuals’ personal hygiene and daily living tasks, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and grooming; changes wound dressings to prevent infection.
  • Moves, positions, lifts, and transports individuals to deliver individuals to appropriate treatment areas, and to make individuals comfortable.
  • Talks with individuals, listens to concerns and responses, and encourages individuals to fully cooperate and participate in treatment and rehabilitation activities.
  • Educates and counsels individuals regarding health, medications, procedures, and treatment goals.
  • Performs housekeeping tasks, such as changing linens, and may assist other staff in cleaning activities.
  • Monitors supply inventories and completes requisition forms to ensure adequate supply levels.
  • May observe and supervise the activities of unlicensed direct care staff, including Nursing Assistants, to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and requirements, reports observations to higher-level staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Open Competitive: eligible for or possession of a license and current registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State.

Salary Range:

Per Civil Service guidelines 

  • Hiring Rate: $42,493 Base Salary plus $3,087 Location Pay (Full-Time 1.0FTE)
