Job Summary:

The Department of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Director of Nursing. The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to: 

  • Leading the clinical and administrative operations of a demanding emergency room, which is the primary source of admissions to the hospital, with approximately 65,000 visits annually.
  • Ensuring patient safety by maintaining standards of practice for nursing, as defined by the American Nursing Association Code of Ethics, Nursing Scope, and Standard of Practice.
  • Supervising four (4) charge nurses, staff nurses, and other ancillary staff, with the primary goal of developing a team that provides comprehensive, evidence-based standards of care to meet the needs of a diverse patient population. –
  • Serving as a process and quality Improvement agent for Emergency Services, Implementing Performance Improvement Projects to:
    • Reduce Door to Physician times.
    • Reduce patient "leaving without being seen (LWBS) rates.
    • Improve overall patient satisfaction scores.
    • Decrease the Nurse Turnover Rate. Developing and maintaining a desirable work environment for the ED team. Guiding clinical practice and serving as a subject matter expert and mentor / leader to the team. 
  • Working collaboratively with the Medical Director to respond to many challenges facing the Emergency Department and improve the overall functioning of the ED thus improving the overall quality of patient care. 
  • Developing and implementing innovative strategies to recruit and retain qualified emergency department nursing and ancillary staff.
  • Establishing, maintaining, and promoting effective communications within the department and organization to achieve established goals.
  • Assuming fiscal responsibility for patient care services using innovation and creativity to explore ways to reduce costs while maintaining or Improving quality patient outcomes. Reviewing variance and approving plane of action for the correction of variances in productivity and budgetary performance.
  • Encouraging staff to achieve effective working relationships desired patient outcomes and unit/departmental organizational goals.
  • Interacting with coworkers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the core values of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing
  • 10-years of Emergency Nursing experience; 5-years of Emergency Department leadership role experience.
  • CEN required.
  • Ability to think logically and sequentially and understand redesign concepts.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Skilled and knowledgeable in the areas of finance, operations, strategic planning, marketing, human resources, and computer technology. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nurse Executive Board Certification (NE-BC).

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday; 8:00am to 4:30pm
