Job Summary:

The Information Services & Technology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a PACS Database Administrator. The successful candidate will: 

  • Be responsible for day-to-day PAC'S operations including image workflow, archiving auto-routing-pro fetching, and other related activities, including data reconciliation.
  • Work closely with unit operations managers to ensure timely and complete capture DICOM image data into the PACS as well as network transmission, RIS validation, and exception handling.
  • Investigate, identify and prepare proposals to solve specific problems within all applicable operational areas, working closely with unit operations managers and division heads as well as involving the next level of administration as appropriate
  • Work closely with the Senior IT manager 10 develop operating standards, policies and procedures. including security for P4CS. RIS, imaging archive systems, and other informatics systems.
  • Review feedback from other end users. Complies and analyzes support data and recommend procedural and educational changes as appropriate.
  • Work closely with radiology quality management personnel to identify future needs and to design efficient workflow processes.
  • Maintain a complete list of system hardware including AR Title, software version port, IP address, and physical location. Primary staff person for generating and maintaining technical diagrams and configuration drawings (including assigned AR titles and software versions).
  • Work with the Director(s) of Imaging informatics, the Chiefs of Radiology, and their respective administrators to identify present and future needs for equipment installation.
  • Oversee activities of vendors in all phases of installation and implementation of new PAC'S, RIS, and other imaging informatics systems.
  • Prepare reports for administration on all aspects of PACS, RIS operations as appropriate or directed. 
  • Attend and participate in departmental/hospital meetings.  
  • Attend seminars and training sessions to maintain an appropriate level of professional competence. 
  • Ensure all applicable departments, Hospital, and Joint Commission guidelines are met. 
  • Perform other functions as required and assigned.
  • Must have a full understanding and implementation of HL7 & DICOM standards. Prior experience in interfaces using HL7 standard among Hospital Information Systems including PACS preferred.
  • Key person to interface existing hospital databases (i.e. - Voice Recognition, RIS, Breast Imaging JS, EIR, LIS) to PACS.
  • Be responsible for the routine correction of database inconsistencies and database cleanup.
  • Need to have a thorough knowledge of Radiology workflow.
  • Perform acceptance testing data information, including transfer of all Radiology Systems to ensure compatibility with PACS.
  • Perform quarterly Diagnostic Workstation testing as per ACR and New York State requirements.
  • Work closely with Radiology modality managers and vendors' engineers to ensure timely and complete capture of DICOM digital image data into the PACS system as well as network transmission and exceptions handling.
  • Train and support faculty and residents in Radiology PACS and 3-D image reconstruction software as well as image transmission to and from PAC'S.
  • Support staff training and support for scanning films and documents into PACS, uploading outside Images into PACS, and providing copies and/or access to exams (i.e. burning CDs/DVDs from PACS. managing online and remote access).
  • Provide support for all PACS end-users, including remote access and networking needs.
  • Work with vendors in all phases of installation and implementation of new PACS-related systems and modalities. 
  • Manage and support all modality work-lists. 
  • Manage system backup, 
  • Manage end-user databases. 
  • Create and manage pre-fetching algorithm and maintenance.
  • Required Qualifications:
  • Four or more years of related experience in the healthcare IT setting required.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related healthcare discipline or Information Systems discipline.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
  • Must be able to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and un concurrent multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Proficiency in various OS and database systems, Knowledge of computer systems using common operating systems (Windows, Unix/Linux, Mac), data communication standards and equipment, network protocols, database management, internet protocols, and systems analysis methods and design.
  • Familiarity with specific radiology and imaging-specific applications such as orthopedic templating, 3D reconstruction, speech recognition. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related field preferred.
  • American Board of Imaging Informatics (ABII) preferred.

  • Monday-Friday; 9:00am-5:00p
