Job Summary:

The Office of Compliance and Audit Services at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a Revenue Cycle Advisor. The successful candidate will: 

  • Be responsible for providing guidance and expertise related to hospital and physician revenue cycle issues.
  • Reading and analyzing new laws and regulations to identify key and regulatory changes impacting revenue cycle compliance, including changes reflected in the Inpatient & Outpatient Prospective Payment System rules and Physician Fee Schedules.
  • Creating an Informational based Narrative to highlight areas requiring focus by hospital administration, and to guide and improve revenue cycle processes.
  • Serving as the expert to provide guidance and direction to senior management related to newly proposed business models and payment structures.
  • Reviewing draft reports prepared by the Documentation & Coding Audit group to ensure correct interpretation of audit results.
  • Using knowledge and experience to analyze detailed financial and coding data to identify reimbursement concerns, underlying root causes, and other related issues, as requested by senior management.
  • Providing some assistance and support to Vice President of Compliance & Audit Services by:
    • Performing an annual revenue cycle compliance risk assessment for the identification and mitigation of revenue cycle risk and identifying areas to include in the annual compliance & audit work-plan;
    • Investigating and providing guidance on audits and inquiries brought forward by the internal staff, government agencies, and/or commercial payers impacting revenue cycle issues;
    • Acting in a project management capacity for revenue cycle-related initiatives.
  • Updates revenue cycle audit tools and templates, as necessary.
  • Update revenue cycle training materials, as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 20 years in healthcare regulatory compliance, 15 of which must be in a State academic medical center setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of healthcare revenue cycle requirements, including Medicare, Medicaid, third-party payer coverage, and reimbursement practices.
  • Ability to effectively and accurately analyze healthcare laws and regulations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
