Job Summary:

The Division of Comparative Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Veterinary Technician (Generalist).

The Veterinary Technician (Generalist) will be responsible for assisting the Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) meet its obligations to maintain the health and welfare of all species. A qualified individual must be able to evaluate the health and welfare of the animals through beneficial species-specific behaviors while allowing researchers to reach the specific scientific goals of their research. The selected candidate must be capable of the following: 

  • Daily Vivarium room rounds to identify animals exhibiting psychosocial distress when individually housed or with restricted activity; May have to work occasional weekends and/or evenings.
  • Meet with research personnel and the facility veterinarian to create strategies for treating animals displaying abnormal behaviors.
  • Animal census management and review including working with Principal Investigators and their staff to correct animal census records in the DCM Database.
  • Implement, document IACUC-approved exemptions from enrichment or social housing; assist other Vet Techs with enrichment programs and other daily tasks.
  • Assist the Attending Veterinarian and Supervisor of Veterinary Technicians/Animal Operating Room in animal health surveillance procedures.
  • Prepare the operating room for procedures, including preparation and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies; assist with surgical procedures provide and including administering and monitoring anesthesia; provide post-operative care and treatments as prescribed by veterinarian and document appropriately.
  • Order, distribute supplies that may include intake, logging, and administering controlled substances; Maintain operating/ procedures rooms, inventory, and stocking supplies.
  • Teach and demonstrate proper, humane, and safe methodologies in using animals for research to research personnel and DCM staff.
  • Maintain a variety of records of animals, clinical procedures, training provided.
  • Provide assistance in the writing, revising, and editing of SOPs as needed; Administer treatments and monitors the health of animals during quarantine (e.g., TB testing).
  • Various other responsibilities may also be assigned and can vary based upon personal interests or departmental needs. 

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2-years working with animals in veterinary care functions in research and/or clinical.
  • Experience using Excel, Word, Outlook, and the ability to learn various Division of Comparative Medicine databases for documentation.
  • Knowledge of the most recent editions of the Guide for Care and Use of Animal Labs, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, and Good Laboratory Practice are all essential. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree and/or NYS Veterinary Technician license preferred and/or ALAT or higher AAALAS certification.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday; 8:00am to 4:00pm
